Moonta Mines

Scattered around Moonta are a bunch of abandoned mines and enginehouses from the early days of settlement when copper was mined in the area.

These old ruins make for some nice photos.

Kernewek Lowender - Parade in Moonta

The colony of South Australia brought a load of Cornish miners over in the 19th century when veins of metal ores were discovered. Moonta has probably the greatest concentration of these families, although the mines are all closed now and the area is mostly given over to ranching and wheat.

Every year, the community puts on a festival and parade to celebrate their ancestry, and invite Cornish descendants from around the country to join in.

Getting there on the Overland

The Overland train - named for the Overland wagons that used to roll across the country between Melbourne and Adelaide before Adelaide built its deep water port. Now, its just a pleasant way of travelling.

City - Albert Park - St Kilda

The morning of my first full day in Melbourne, and I walked across the city to Tourist information to get some maps and train/tram info. Then I headed south of the city, by Albert Park (home of the Melbourne Formula 1 Grand Prix) and into St Kilda, which is an old fishing village and seaside retreat for the city.

One of the best ways to see a city is from above - and the Rialto Tower offers that opportunity.

Eureka Tower

On the southbank of the river Yarra is the tallest building in Melbourne, and the tallest residential tower in the world (not counting spires and radio masts). Although, I felt that the Rialto Tower over in the CBD itself was a better deal, and offered better views.

Treasury Gardens and East Melbourne

Just to the east of the bustling CBD are the quiet parks and avenues of East Melbourne - some interesting architecture, and a nice change of pace.

Cancer Council Classic (Adelaide 2009)

The Cancer Council Classic is a preview race for the Tour Down Under. Because of Lance Armstrong's return to racing, the crowds swamped onto Rymill Park, over in the East Parklands, where almost 140,000 watched the race around part of the old Grand Prix street circuit.

TDU Stage 5 - Aldinga and Willunga

Stage 5 (of 6) for the Tour Down Under - the only Pro Cycling Tour outside of Europe. The day was hot and dry. The stage consists of just over 100 km of flat riding, with another 45 km up over Willunga (twice) before a 3 km sprint finish.
